Welcome Aboard, Senator Franken 0
Senator Al Franken! Yes, yes, I know that technically he’s still just Senator-elect. So sue me. After eight months of waiting and watching as stacks of dollars were unnecessarily spent just to get to the inevitable piece of paper below, I’m calling him Senator Franken from now on. Treat it as a teensy bit of recompense for the fact he got chiseled out of six months of his six-year term by Republican intransigence.
The certificate of election (courtesy of the Minnesota Independent) was accompanied by a cover letter (pdf). Here’s what the certificate states:
Certificate of Election for Six-Year Term
To the President of the Senate of the United States:
This is to certify that on the fourth day of November, 2008, Al Franken was duly chosen by the qualified electors of the State of Minnesota a Senator from said State to represent said State in the Senate of the United States for the term of six years, beginning on the 3rd day of January, 2009.
Witness: His excellency our governor Tim Pawlenty, and our seal hereto affixed at Saint Paul, Minnesota this 30th day of June, in the year of our Lord 2009.
Senator Franken is hosting a rally at the state Capitol today from noon to 1 p.m. to celebrate his victory. U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and DFL party chair Brian Melendez are expected to appear. Senate Democrats say they want to seat Senator Franken as early as next week. Good. But whenever they do get around to swearing him in, nobody should call it early.
