Cheers and Jeers: Wednesday 0
From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE…
Too Easy. Too Easy.
This I know: one of the most memorable and feel-good events at this year’s Netroots Nation convention in Pittsburgh will be the prepping by the Netroots for the Troops volunteers of 300 care packages that’ll be sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s pretty much assembly line-style work, but knowing that the recipients-in-uniform are going to feel like they just won the lottery when they open theirs makes it a pretty emotional experience.
The packages include stuff they tell us they need—including work gloves, phone cards, key rings with LED flashlights, gel insoles for boots, and DVDs and CDs to help ‘em minimize the numbing boredom that affects so many during their down time.
The goal is to raise $50k. Between cash and in-kind corporate donations we’re about halfway there, which is great.
This morning I’m setting a mini-goal that we can knock outta the park in a matter of minutes: a quick and down-’n-dirty $1,000. That’s 50 donations of $20, or a hundred donations of $10. Boom. Done. Easy. No muss, no fuss. Ring the bell and you can take the rest of the day off (I’ll even write your boss a note).
I’m in for the first $20. Here’s the magic Netroots for the Troops linky. Everyone who donates will receive much good fortune and luck. Lurkers who donate will also receive extra gravy on their meatballs.
No, God isn’t keeping track of who donates and who doesn’t—that would be silly. But I think Jed Lewison is, and he may have some footage of non-donors that may “accidentally” end up on Daily Kos TV. (Hint: “March, 2002″…”pink toenail polish”…”rumpus room”…”trapeze”…”10-W-30.” Ring any bells in your world?)
Please note that the thank-you screen won’t reflect a donation to NFTT, but rather Netroots Nation. Rest assured your donation WILL be forwarded to NFTT. For peace of mind, you can note that the donation is intended for “Netroots for the Troops” in the comment section when you submit your contribution.
Donations are tax deductible, thanks to Netroots Nation and its partner, Netroots Arts and Education Initiative, a CA 501(c)3 corporation. NAEI partners with Netroots Nation to support its programming.
On behalf of the NFTT organizers and volunteers, thank you!
